Once you have your initial committee and constitution in place it is time to petition your union for membership. This process varies from union to union but generally involves you submitting a petition to the union containing details of the society and a certain number of signatures of people supporting the society which will then be considered by the union council for ratification.

The form

You will often have a form (either paper or online depending on your union) which you will need to fill out with all the details of your society and probably attach a copy of your constitution as well.

There is likely to be a number of signatures required as well, where people will typically be asked to give their name, student number and signature in order to show they support the idea of forming the society.

Everyone makes use of their friends and people they live with when forming a new society, so don't be afraid to just go round your friends and house or hall mates and ask them if they would they mind signing your petition.

Also, if you're feeling bold, go to the Christian Union and ask them - after all, they will probably want to encourage the debate and are always friendly (and will probably have lots of people!).

Ratification

Forms are normally considered by some kind of union council body, an elected body of students who make decisions as to how the union is run. They can either accept or reject the petition, though if they reject it you will usually be able to make modifications and re-submit it for consideration.

If they do reject it, make sure you get feedback as to why they rejected it so you can make appropriate changes, though it is also always worth kicking up a fuss and claiming discrimination (which if your union has faith based societies, it obviously is).
