Origins
The Durham University Humanist Society (often shortened to DUHS) was founded and ratified at the very end of the 2007/2008 academic year by its current president Ellis Pugh and vice-president Bea Moyes. The idea to form the society was principally motivated by the large and vocal presence of a number of religious groups at the university, whose bias and patronising events created a strong call for a non-religious group to counter them.
Aims and Principles
Although nominally a Humanist Society, the group actually acts as an umbrella society for all students of a non-religious bent, counting among its members atheists, agnostics, secularists and even the odd liberal Christian.
Its main goals are to: 1) Provide a non-religious voice in the university 2) Provide a place for non-religious students to meet and discuss their views, 3) To actively work on campaigns in the university and elsewhere which it deems to be parallel to the above aims of the society and 4) To take part in a number of community based projects in Durham.
Structure
The society consists of a small executive committee and a larger membership. The current exec are:
President: Ellis Pugh
Vice-President: Bea Moyes
Treasurer: Tom Moorcroft
Secretary: Lucia Duff
Publicity Rep: Adam Knott
Webmaster: Adam Symonds
Elections to executive committee will take place in the second term of each year, the position running for the year. Membership of the society consists of either yearly, or life members- only paid members can be on the exec.
