Getting started (Awareness week guide)

From SecularPortal

Planning an awareness week can be a daunting task, but it is far less scary than you think. If this is the first time you have run an awareness week then look at it this year - there is no precedent so even if it all goes tits up, nobody is expecting anything anyway.

Picking a date

The first task is decide when to hold it. It needs to be in term time as otherwise there simply won't be many students around and also many of the people in your society that would be willing to help out are also likely to go home too and so staffing will also be an issue.

You also need to be sensitive to when exams are on, when people will be revising for exams and when there are lots of coursework deadlines. This will vary from university to university so you will have to use your own judgement on this.

Many societies find that mid-way through the second term is a good time to hold it as other than perhaps the weather it represents a good mix of society members being part of the society long enough to really commit to it, a lack of deadlines and plenty of planning time beforehand.

There are some notable exceptions however, Southampton hold their week at the end of the first time and Leeds hold their week during the first week back after Easter.

Picking a venue

As the week is about raising awareness, the best location is having a marquee at a central point on campus.
