History of the AHS
From SecularPortal
The AHS began life in The Fenton pub in Leeds when ideas began to be thrown about regarding how free thinking students across the country could be brought together to share their knowledge and experience with each other.
From this Secular Portal was born with the intention of bringing together free think student societies from acrosss the UK with the intention of eventually confirming an alliance similar to UCCF and FOSIS.
Soon after this the British Humanist Association got in touch to suggest a similar scheme and so plans were pushed forward including all the societies the BHA had already been in contact with to form a national organisation.
Edinburgh conference
In June 2008 the first national conference was held bringing together the initial societies in order to decide the structure and nature of a national organisation to unite free thinking student societies.
The conference was hosted by the Edinburgh Humanist Society and saw the outline of the organisation drawn up and the name, The National Federation of Atheist, Humanist and Secular Student Societies, the AHS, chosen.
Leeds conference
The second national conference was held in Leeds in November 2008, hosted by Leeds Atheist Society. At the conference the constitution was formally ratified and the first executive was elected and trustees and officers appointed.
