Introduction (Awareness week guide)

From SecularPortal

An awareness week is week crammed full of events dedicated to promoting the society and it's beliefs. All members of the AHS are encouraged to hold such a week annually at their university or college.

What is an awareness week?

An awareness week is a week crammed full of events dedicated to promoting reason, science and free thinking.

Most awareness weeks feature at least ten events - one at lunch time and one in the evening each day and some feature many more.

Why hold an awareness week?

Many people find it important to push free thinking. This does not mean you need to push the atheist idiology but there is nothing wrong with "evangelising" the idea that you should think for yourself.

Awareness weeks also provide a great source of promotion for your society. A mix of talks and events should attract a wide and diverse audience and so you should be able to reach a pot of potential new members for your society.

History

The first of such weeks was Rationalist Week 2007 run in April 2007 by Leeds Atheist Society. The week was a huge success and reached around 500 people and had since become an annual tradition (as it was always planned to be) at Leeds.
