The Leeds Atheist Society, also known as the LUU Atheist Society is a student society associated with Leeds University Union.
History
Founded in December 2006 by Chris Worfolk, and formally ratified in January 2007 Leeds Atheist Society has gone from strength to strength. The 2008/2009 acadmeic year saw the society smash its previous membership records, recruiting nearly a hundred members in the first few weeks alone. The increase in membership has allowed the society to increase its presence on campus.
Facing opposition from the religious societies already on campus Leeds A-Soc has put on a variety of events aimed at educating the student body on idea such as rationalism, agnosticism, the problem of evil, the historical accuracy of the bible and the social evolution of ethics. Some of the event have sparked some controversy, this was highlighted by the society's decision to hold a lecture on free speech entitled "I will mock Muhammed if I want to..."
The society employs a very effective diversity policy aimed at ensuring that every student on campus is represented, including the religious ones. Any member of any faith or belief group can join the society and run for committee.
This ideal of diversity led to the society introducing two courses, One Life and Perspective. One Life deals with living and life. Building on the ideas of "One Life. One World. Live it. Love it.", One Life looks at how to live a meaningful and full life, without relgious dogma. Perspective deals directly with religion, allowing members of a variety of faiths to speak candidly about their beliefs and ideas and for people to question them in an open and informal environment.
Organisation
Leeds Atheist Society employs a two tier committee system - executive and non-executive. Both committees are elected by a simple majority at the Annual General Meeting (usually held in April). The committee runs from September to August allowing for a hand-over programme to ease the transition.
