Oxford Atheist Society
From SecularPortal
The Oxford Atheist Society is a student society that was founded in Trinity Term 2008 (that's Summer Term 2008!) by Richard Thompson and Will Potter, which aims to introduce and help broaden the understanding of Atheism amongst the University of Oxford populace. The society is careful to promote an open, questioning arena in which people can discuss almost any issue they wish to do with Atheism, whether it is philosophical, political, social or ethical. The only stance the Society itself takes is that it does not believe in God, and apart from this everything is up for debate, with all other opinions coming from individual members and speakers.
The society typically hosts one event every week and time is split between student debates, speaker talks, film nights and socials. The society aims to cater for the wide variety of views that are out there, which vary both in their conviction and in their depth of thought, by treating everyone with respect and allowing all involved a chance to put forward their opinions logically (and hopefully with a touch of humour), without anyone resorting to anything derogatory.
The society is open to everyone, regardless of their personal religious beliefs.
Events are free for all members and will generally cost £2 per event for non-members. Membership is £5 for a year, or £10 for life.
