The ULAS Mascot!

The University of Liverpool Atheist Society (ULAS) is a society dedicated to providing a friendly forum for freethinkers at Liverpool's universities

A (Brief) History

The University of Liverpool Atheist Society was constituted in May 2008 and, after a fairly rough first six months of existence, settled into its current form in November 2008. During that early time the emphasis was very much on the social aspects of the society, with some fundraising thrown in for good measure. However, some members of the society decided that they would like to take the intellectual side of the society more seriously and so, alongside frequent visits to the Saro Wiwa Bar in the Liverpool Guild of Students, plans started being made to set up events of a less alcohol-oriented nature. The founding message of the society was positive atheism, and this was certainly maintained through the development of the society. The current "manifesto" states the twin aims of (i) Intellectual Atheism and (ii) Practical Atheism.

AHS Representative

The above are ably(?) assisted by a webmaster, who will eventually finish our new website...

Events

As a society in its infancy (and still experiencing the odd birth pang...), our events have been fairly experimental. Aside from weekly social meetings we have organised a film-screening ("The God Who Wasn't There"), been carol singing (secular carols, of course!), organised a Children in Need fundraising night (superhero fancy dress!) and "competed" in the Santa Dash with the sponsorship money going to Unicef.

The Future

At the time of writing, and with a few events under our collective belts, ULAS looks forward to bigger and better things: more fundraising, its first Reason Week and greater partnership with students at Liverpool's other universities: Liverpool John Moores and Liverpool Hope.
