Writing a constitution
From SecularPortal
A constitution is a governing document that lays out how a society is organised and run, what the responsibilities of the committee are and other important information. Your union probably has a sample constitution which contains all the bylaws of that union which you need to include. A good place to start is to get hold of a copy and modify it to your needs.
What to include
Generally your constitution should contain:
- Name, aims and objectives
- Membership regulations and privileges
- Details of the committee
- Details of each committee role
- How Annual General Meetings are run
- Electoral procedures
Top tips
- Remember that your constitution is the document that will go to the union council for approval so bare that in mind when writing it. You can always change it later.
For a sample constitution that you can download and freely adapt to the specific needs of your University, go to the Resources [1] page.
